Inception

I’ve got a couple of things to say about Inception. It’s a masterpiece in all respects, but especially in the script department. The film just flies by while taking you on a increasingly complex narrative journey that is very willing to leave you behind at any point.

And ultimately, what is the film about? It’s about man who cannot let go of his past. And depending on your interpretation of the ending, he succeeds in doing so or becomes lost forever in a dream.

My interpretation of the ending is that Cobb is almost certainly in some Mombasa-esque dream den somewhere having created in is mind what we see as an elaborate subconscious journey to prove himself worthy of his family after the death of his wife. It immediately seemed strange to me that ‘Limbo’ was a shared state but when the film’s ‘reality level’ is viewed as Cobb’s dream, this totally makes sense. The Limbo we see is not the dream world visited by Cobb and Mal, it’s the very depth of Cobb’s guilt-ridden subconscious mind (It’s also where he must go to finally confront Mal). He succeeds and travels back up the levels to finally see his children, although he is now completely lost to the dream.

I’m afraid I need another pass at this one. I want to pay close attention to Ariadne, who is an extremely suspicious character. Why do we never see her totem again after she crafts it? Is it because she knows she in Cobb’s dream the whole time?

Love it.
