The following is a statement by Senator Chris Dodd, Chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA) on the so- called “Blackout Day” protesting anti-piracy legislation:

“Only days after the White House and chief sponsors of the legislation responded to the major concern expressed by opponents and then called for all parties to work cooperatively together, some technology business interests are resorting to stunts that punish their users (in fact, in the case of Wikipedia, the action was requested by senior editors, also known as ‘users’) or turn them into their corporate pawns (the average redditor would take offense at this, then shit on your desk), rather than coming to the table to find solutions to a problem (hilarious!) that all now seem to agree is very real (yes! we do agree on that!) and damaging (well, not so much). ”

“It is an irresponsible response (huh?) and a disservice to people who rely on them for information and use their services (yes! we do! you know what we also do? give them money out of the kindness of our hearts even though we don’t have to. bet that grinds your gears.). It is also an abuse of power (whoa whoa whoa. jimmy wales’ head is big enough) given the freedoms these companies enjoy in the marketplace today (is that a threat? like ‘i hope you like all that freedom, google. might not be around much longer’). It’s a dangerous and troubling development when the platforms that serve as gateways to information intentionally skew the facts (like ‘the television/vcr/cable tv/pvr will destroy the movie industry’?) to incite their users in order to further their corporate interests (ok, fair call in that reddit is owned by conde nast but wikipedia is non-profit, man).”

“A so-called “blackout” (pretty sure that’s exactly what they’re calling it) is yet another gimmick, albeit a dangerous one (for who? people who cheat on pub trivia?), designed to punish elected and administration officials who are working diligently to protect American jobs from foreign criminals (and dvd replication facilities, no doubt). It is our hope that the White House and the Congress will call on those who intend to stage this “blackout” to stop the hyperbole (see “dangerous gimmick”) and PR stunts and engage in meaningful efforts to combat piracy (like our buddies the RIAA suing a single mother for 2 million dollars).”
