Across the Sea and the cynical fanbase.
The amount of people turning on Damon and Carlton today is amusing.
Are any of them really going to stop watching because Jack said Adam and Eve’s clothes were only 50 years old?
Some criticism has been measured and thoughful (Jace Lacob, Televisionary) and some are ready to tar and feather Darlton for ruining their beloved show.
Myself? I was pleased with the episode. The confirmation that this cycle of protection, replacement, corruption and betrayal has probably been going on for thousands of years? Loved it. Jacob and MiB are now definitively reflected in Jack and (when still alive) Locke (although the roles are now, obviously, reversed). Desmond’s time in the hatch as the keeper of the intense power of the island suddenly takes on new meaning for me as an allegory for Jacob himself. But what do I know?
Discussing what I think it all means with my Losties is my favourite thing about the show. If last night, I had found out that say… Jacob was this particular Egyptian God, I’d be like… OK, this crazy theory we might have had is correct. Now how does that fit in with Jack and Flocke and stuff? Darlton has left it up to us to fill in the gaps because at the end of the day, it’s not important where Allison Janney came from. What’s important is what she did to these two kids. Or made them do to each other…
No single interpretation is correct. This is art.
And just for the record:
KATE: Any idea how long they’ve been here?
JACK (not a forensic anthropologist): Long. It takes 40 or 50 years for clothing to degrade like this.
